2. Billy Elliot

Touring across the UK

Was your mum a budding ballet girl growing up? I wonder if she ever had a classmate like Billy Elliot; the boy who swapped boxing for ballet, turned his family upside down and danced his way into the nation’s hearts... Dead Mam (no spoilers, that’s her actual character name) watches over Billy throughout the show and reminds us that a mother’s love is always there, even if she isn’t always around to give it.

The scenes between Billy and his mum are some of the most moving and emotional in the entire show – so bring plenty of tissues! Billy Elliot thrilled audiences on the West End for over 10 years, and is continuing to wow audiences up and down the country with its 2017 UK tour, and the perfect ticket gift is waiting for those of you hailing from Liverpool and Milton Keynes.

3. Mamma Mia!

Touring across the UK and in the West End

How could we make a Mother’s Day post without mentioning this show – it has ‘mamma’ in the name! If you‘ve moved out since Mother’s Day 2016, you might have found that opportunities to spend time with mum are a lot harder to come by nowadays - so why not spend some quality time together on a beautiful Greek Island WITHOUT have to look for your passport! Featuring the hits of Swedish super group ABBA (otherwise known as everybody’s Eurovision guilty pleasure) Mamma Mia! is a mothers and daughters story though and through, and reminds you that you’re never too old sing, dance, or even fall in love.

In the West End, Mamma Mia! is currently playing at The Novello Theatre, but if your budget doesn’t stretch to a day in London – never fear! Mamma Mia! also has a production touring the country.

4. The Girls

Phoenix Theatre

Gary Barlow and Tim Firth’s new musical is the hilarious, heart-warming and touching production that is taking the West End by storm. Boasting 5 star reviews from The Daily Mail, Metro, The Sun and more; The Girls is the life affirming true story of a group of WI members who, in an effort to help their grieving friend work through the loss of her husband to cancer; create a nude calendar to raise money for the hospital in which he was treated, and turn it into something monumental.

This is a story that mums, grans and daughters alike will love. So if you’re looking for a show to take every generation of the women to (and a guilty pleasure for those special men in your life as well)  – The Girls is a home run.

5. David Baddiel - My Family: Not The Sitcom

Playhouse Theatre

If your mother fancies a bit of stand-up, then look no further than the Playhouse Theatre at the end of this month. One half of comedy duo 'Baddiel and Skinner' and all-round funny man David will be entertaining crowds from 28th March with his disrespectful comedy show My Family: Not The Sitcom.

A frankly honest and on-the-nose tribute to his father and late mother, David Baddiel's most recent routine wowed at the Menier Chocolate Factory last year, and is the perfect choice for a day out to the capital with your extended family. Laugh and cry as you recognise your own flesh and blood in his anecdotes - all about growing old with dysfunctional relatives and more important topics like gay cats.

6. The Glass Menagerie

Duke of York's Theatre

If musicals aren’t your thing, and your mum is the kind of woman who prefers her family drama to be on stage instead of off – treat her to a ticket for Tennessee Williams’ classic, The Glass Menagerie. This Broadway production has been transported from The Great White Way straight into the heart of the West End by Tony Award Winning Director John Tiffany – and tells the story of a single mother and her family as they struggle to cope with a life built on the foundations of an empty American Dream.

With stunning performances from an almost entirely Olivier-nominated cast (including Broadway icon Cherry Jones), your mum will love the acclaimed revival of this definitive American play.

7. Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Harold Pinter Theatre

Alcohol, mind games and catastrophic truth telling. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is arguably one of the most viciously intense pieces of theatre currently playing on the West End, and is definitely not one for the faint hearted. But if your mum is ready to embark on an emotional rollercoaster, she’d better buckle up, because a ticket to this production will provide her with an evening of drama like she’s never seen before.

Edward Albee’s landmark play returns to the West End after 11 years with an all-star cast including Imelda Staunton (Gypsy, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) and Conleth Hill (The Producers, Game of Thrones). This is not your typical Mother’s Day gift, but why settle for typical when transcendence is simply a click away?
